Prologue: Dreams and Monsters
Screams of pain and horror echoed, as people fought in the dead of night. The only light was from the moon and the buildings that were set ablaze. Amongst the fighting a young boy quickly ran down one of the halls of the burning buildings, frantically looking for someone. As he passed one of the rooms the sound of a baby's cry stopped him dead in his tracks. Turning around he quickly entered the room "Mother!" a woman looked up from her place on a large bed.
"Haru..." The woman smiled weakly at the young boy "Meet... you little sister." The woman held up a small bundle, handing it to the young boy. "Take care of her..."
"Mother? What do you mean?" The woman's hands fell, as her eyes began to close. "Mother? Mother!? Hold on you'll be-"
"No, Haru..." The woman smiled weakly "My time is up, please take care of her..." Haru sniffed as tears pricked the corners of his eyes "Her name is-"
"AHH!" Emiko's eyes flew open as she came face to face with the floor, as her bed room door was slammed open "OW!!!" She glared up at the old man standing in her doorway "WHAT THE HELL OLD MAN!!!" A tick mark appeared above the old man's head.
"WHO AR YOU CALLING OLD?!?!"
"WHO ELSE YOU OLD WIND BAG!!!"
"Tch" The man glared daggers down at the younger girl. "Get your laze ass up, and get down here for breakfast. First come, first serve." And with that he disappeared down the hall. Emiko stuck her tong out at the man's retreating figure before sitting up.
"Man, I had that strange dream again..." She narrowed her eyes in thought "But... it seemed so real..."
"EMIKO!" She grimaced, before picking herself up off the floor.
"Yeah, yeah. I heard you the first time." She sighed as she came down the stairs "Geez don't get your panties in a bunch..." She smirked as yet another tick mark appeared above his head. A few of the younger kids sitting at the table giggled, boosting Emiko's ego, until someone suddenly pulled on her ear "Ow! M-Misaki! Ow, ow, and OW!" Emiko complained as the shorter redhead pinched her ear.
"Emiko hurry up and eat or were gonna be late! Again!" Misaki glared at the older girl before grabbing some food. Emiko pouted but grabbed some toast before both girls headed back up the stairs, and into the small bedroom they shared together. Emiko quickly threw off her pajamas before throwing on her school uniform.
The uniform consisted of a white button-up blouse, with a black ribbon tied at the collar. A yellow blazer, will a short black pleated skirt with black socks that reached their mid thigh along with black flats. Once dressed, Emiko pulled her hair into a side ponytail, pushing her strawberry blonde bangs out of her deep brown eyes.
When Emiko turned to face Misaki, she found her wearing an identical uniform while she pulled her long red hair into twin pigtails. As Misaki turned around, her beep blue eyes locking onto brown, as she asked "Are you ready?" With a short nod both girls excited the room they shared and left the cramped orphanage. "Bye, Grandpa!" Misaki yelled as they passed the older man who ran the orphanage.
"Later old man." Emiko yelled, the older man just grunted in response to the two girls. Once out the front door, both girls raced down the stairs and across the driveway until Emiko suddenly stopped and whistled. "Koromaru! Todd! Let's go!" At the call, a small albino shiba ino and a small gray/sliver fox raced towards the blonde girl. The four raced down the streets swerving in-between people, shouting a few 'excuse me's' here and there, until they reached the gates of their school where they skid to a stop.
"Okay," She turned to look down at the pup by her feet "once were inside we need you guys to stay out of sight okay?" Both animals responded with a yep before disappearing into the small forest just outside of the school. Both girls looked at each other, nodding, before they headed towards the school.
As they walked through the gates, all the students who were talking in their little groups became silent as they all turned to look at the pair walking through the school yard. Some looked at them like they were something the dog dragged in. A few looked at them in fear. Others looked like they pitied them. Emiko's head snapped in the direction of a few and snapped "What the hell are you looking at!" The group quickly turned and ran towards the main school building. "God, what's their problem?!" She mumbled under her breath as she glared in the direction the group of kids ran in.
"Emiko-" Misaki started but was cut off by the blonde.
"What! You see how everyone looks at us!" She huffed with an agitated look on her face "They look at us like we're either the most pathetic thing on earth or we're monsters! It makes me sick..."
Misaki sighed, as she looked at her best friend out of the corner of her eye. There's just no wining with her... Once she makes up her mind there's no changing it. Then again, she wouldn't't be Emiko if she was any different. Misaki chuckled under her breath. "Why are you laughing?" Emiko asked, looking irritated.
Misaki smirked as she stood up strait "It's nothing. I was just thinking about how you'll never change." Emiko puffed out her cheeks in a childish manner before walking ahead of her red haired friend, causing her to giggle once again.
Once both girls entered the school, the bell announced the beginning of class. The two girls said their goodbyes before heading off to their respective class.
As Emiko entered to room all heads turned to look at her. She growled under her breath as she headed towards her seat in the back of the class. People whispering as she went by, but the blonde just ignored them all.
It wasn't long before their teacher entered the class and began today's lecturer. Emiko sighed before turning her attention outside the window tuning out the teacher along with the rest of the class. "God I hate my life." She thought.
"Emiko-Sama, you should be thankful to be alive at all." A calm, deeper, voice responded within her mind.
"Shut up Ryuu. I'm not in the mood for you to lecture me." She responded back as she mentally sighed.
Ryuu responded with a small "Hmm." Before falling silent. Ryuu is a voice that has been within her mind for as long as the blonde could remember.
At first she believed she was going craze since she was hearing a voice no one else could hear. But as time went by she realized she wasn't craze, well not yet anyway. As the two talked she soon began to realize that he was not just a fragment of her imagination, but apart of something more complicated, something he refused to tell her about.
With that thought in mind she pouted slightly. Ryuu chuckled in the back of her mind "When the time is right, I will explain everything."
"That's what you say every time!" She yelled back at him. He chuckled before she finally decided to block his voice out as she decided to listen to the teachers boring lecture.
When it came time for lunch, Emiko headed up towards the roof where she would meet up with Misaki. When she reached the roof, she found her red haired friend already waiting for her. "Yo." She called out as she took her place beside the shorter girl.
"Hey Emi-chan!" Misaki smiled, as Emiko opened her boxed lunch.
As Emiko dug into her lunch she notice Misaki pull her iPod out of her backpack. She clicked a few buttons before a familiar song began playing "You watching the anime thing again?" She questioned, raising a questioning brow.
"It's called Naruto, and it's the best anime ever!" Misaki retorted, her eyes never once leaving the screen. Emiko rolled her eyes before she continued to eat her lunch. Misaki was obsessed with Naruto, some anime about ninjas or something.
"Pfft, their just ninja wannabe's..." Emiko mumbled under her breath, but Misaki still heard her.
"Don't diss the ninja's!" She yelled as she smacked Emiko upside the head. Emiko yelped as she clutched her throbbing head, glaring at the girl beside her. The blonde mumble a few profanities under her breath before she went back to eating her lunch.
"Oh and I almost forgot!" Misaki turned to face the blonde beside her "Grandpa asked me to pick up some groceries right after school so I'll have to meet up with you when we get home."
"Mm'k, I have to go to my taijutsu class after school anyway so I'll be home a little late tonight."
Lunch had ended quickly, as well as the rest of the day. It was already dark by the time Emiko began making her way home to the orphanage.
The blonde gave a frustrated sigh as she rubbed some of her sore mussels. "Damn, I'm gonna be so soar tomorrow. Heh," she chuckled as she placed her arms behind her head "at lest they don't hold back on me just 'cause I'm a girl." she walked in silence through the quiet side of town when a sudden thought occurred to her. "Hey, Ryuu?"
"Ugh, would you stop calling me that!? I'm not a princess, far from it in fact! God your so annoying." she huffed the last part under her breath. "ANYWAY. As I was saying, I wanted to know when exactly you going to tell me who, or more specifically, what you are?"
"I have already told you that Emiko-sama. I am Ryuu." He responded back.
She mentally glared at him "You know what I meant! I want to know what you really are and why you are inside of me...... okay that sounded so wrong!" Ryuu chuckled as Emiko shook her head, trying to rid herself of the perverted thought.
"I am simply Ryuu. Nothing more, nothing less." He responded. When Emiko was about to yell at him again, he interrupted her. "That is who I am. The rest must be saved for another time."
Emiko sighed, she knew Ryuu was just as stubborn as her. He was the only one she could ever lose an argument against. "Emiko-sama, may I ask why you have been so persistent about this mater?" Emiko paused her steps as she thought about the question, before she shrugged and continued walking.
"It's just that dream I keep having. It's bugging me, I feel like I've seen it somewhere before like some kind of weird déjà vu." Ryuu was silent after that, causing Emiko to become curious about what was going through his head.... well if he even had one? "Ryuu?"
"I'm sorry hemi, but I can't tell you." He finally responded with a stern tone.
"Ryuu-" Emiko was cut off when a creepy voice called out to her.
"Hey there little girl~" Emiko turned to find three, obviously drunk men, making their way closer to her from a dark alleyway. "Why don't you come play with us~" Emiko scrunched up her nose in disgust, she could smell alcohol on their breath from three feet away.
"Hell no you sick bastards." She growled out at them.
"Ohhh, feisty~ I like it!" The leader of the trio sang. He suddenly grabbed her arm dragging her into the alley. She quickly grabbed the drunk bastards arm, yanking it off her, flipped it behind his back, before kicking the inside of his knees forcing him to kneel on the ground.
The two men behind her growled, one going to punch her but she jumped away from them. "So the little girl can fight?" The leader mockingly questioned, amusement clear on his face. That pissed her off.
"Don't judge a book by its cover." She growled out through clenched teeth. Suddenly one of the men pulled out something from his pocket, it catching the gleam of the street light outside of the alley. A knife. "Well....... I'm fucked."
As she was distracted the man with the knife jumped at her, plunging the knife into her stomach, forcing a gasp to fall from her lips. Another one of the men also jumped towards her punching her in the mouth, causing her lip to split open at the force, blood filling her mouth causing her to cough. The crimson liquid spilling from her mouth, covering her lips and chin, before it dripped onto her cloths.
She quickly jumped to the side when the guy with the knife lunged at her again. She quickly grabbed the arm that held the knife, pressing down on a pressure point causing the man to gasp out in pain. She ripped the knife from his grasp before plunging it into the mans side.
The man once again cried out in pain as she pulled the knife out. She jumped away from him, smirking. "Fuck!" The man cursed as he grabbed his side.
When the stench of blood, that by now covered the floor of the dark alley, finally reached her nose the blonde froze. Emiko's breath suddenly hitching in her throat. "S-Shit.... R-Ryuu!" She gasped out as a sudden burning sensation filled her throat.
"I-I'm sorry hemi... I-I can't control it." Emiko's breathing soon became labored gasps as she squeezed her eyes shut.
When her eyes snapped open, the men before her stood frozen. Fear came off them in waves.
Her eyes were anything but human, as if an animal was suddenly set loose within her. Her eyes screaming for one thing, and one thing only.
"Ryuu speaking to Emiko"
